Granny & Gramps Enjoy Their Staycation

Originally, we had plans of heading down to Virginia to see the sights of Williamsburg, Norfolk, and Yorktown. The makings of a fine vacation. But then we realized we had chores to get done here at home like getting our PA driver's license, eye doctor appointments, and looking for a dining room table. You know...old folk stuff. So we decided to stick around here and have ourselves a "staycation".

We received two FREE tickets to Hershey Park by spending $75 in groceries last month. We were super excited about that deal because we were planning on buying tickets this summer anyway. So last Wednesday we made the short trip out to Hershey to have some fun. We weren't sure what to expect. The only thing we knew for sure was that there was a pretty good chance that we would be eating some chocolate. That alone meant it was going to be a great day.

A Peanut Butter Cup S'more. And they actually roasted the marshmallow over a wood fire. Yum!

Pretty Nice Water Park!
We spent the next day doing the old folk stuff like eye exams, and a trip to the DMV to get a new license. We didn't even have to take a test.  I'm happy to say that my picture actually looks like me again and Jay managed a smile this time which is a HUGE improvement over his last mug shot...er license. We tried to find a table, but we didn't see anything that we wanted to bring home.

The next day we went to the Gettysburg Outlet mall where I bought four (yes four) pairs of shoes. Did you know that there is NO sales tax on clothing or shoes in Pennsylvania. That's a sweet deal:) We also caught a movie when we were down there. We saw "Super 8", which was a good movie but a little scary for our taste, well, a lot scary for Jay's taste. He screamed out loud during one part-I'm not even kidding. Poor guy. So I promised him that the next movie will be a chick flick, but I think he wants to see "Winnie the Pooh" just to be safe.

Even though I thought four pair of shoes was plenty, Jay decided on Saturday to take me to Leesburg, Virginia. This is a beautiful drive that takes us through parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. I will never get tired of this drive (or the destination). Leesburg, has the Taj Mahal of outlets. It has all of my favorite clothing stores and furniture stores. They were having a huge Fourth of July Sale. SWEET! We found a couple good bargains and headed home for a yummy BBQ and the Carlisle fireworks show. The fireworks show was wonderful and was right outside our front door. It was our shortest drive home after seeing fireworks, about ten steps.

On Sunday we started the day at church and I received the new calling of Beehive advisor. I am very excited to be working with the 12-13 year old girls again. And I know I'm going to love the adult leaders as well. Following church, we spent a quiet afternoon here at home and enjoyed a yummy BBQ. Then we headed over to the Dickenson College campus for the free outdoor Harrisburg Symphony concert. The music was wonderful and very patriotic. They did a musical salute to the troops with all the various anthems. The weathermen predicted rain but the weather was perfect. I especially enjoyed watching the fireflies. However, I must admit, seeing all the familes there made me miss my children. They would have enjoyed being there as well.

On Monday we spent the afternoon about five miles away in Boiling Springs watching the "Anything Floats" race. We had a great time cheering on a local tradition. Jay enjoyed hanging out with "Jim" a 75 year old local who filled him in on the history of Boiling Springs. We really had a good time watch the race.

Beautiful Boiling Springs

Kiss My Putt didn't win but they sure looked good.

It's Shower Power with the lead, Dinosaur in second, followed by What the Duck?

Pretty place for a picnic

We ended our evening watching 1776 and the Boston Pops celebrate the Fourth. We decided that having a staycation isn't such a bad thing afterall.
